Paul Guerin’s UK Tour Diary

Belfast’s Spring and Air break was our first port of call on the “Bit of What you Fancy” UK tour, Belfast was cold and wet but the welcome couldn’t have been warmer, what a great place to kick off proceedings, Belfast reminds me so much of Newcastle and we have had some great friends there. Keith’s Mam, dad and brothers were all there, its always great to see them .“What about yeeee Geeee” was the cry all evening… Ah music to my ears. Spike and I sank a couple of pints of Guinness in Katy Daly’s before the show and then plenty more after the show. We were pretty tired as we had left London at 1am the previous morning, but once the after show buzz kicked in there was little point in going to bed as we were leaving for Hard Rock Hell at 4am – hi-ho!

Having never been on Holiday to Pontins I was quite intrigued to see what the British holiday maker gets for their well earned money. Well I know we shouldn’t go on first impressions but Pontins was a scary looking place, the thought of spending two weeks there froze me to the bone, but what a stroke of genius  putting a rock festival in there. Take a couple of thousand thirsty rock fans, a bunch of great bands, somewhere to sleep within crawling distance of the gig that isn’t a damp tent and you have a recipe for success. We went on stage at about 5pm and the venue was packed, you couldn’t have got a Rizla paper in there. You never really know how its going to go when it’s a festival  crowd and not your own show, but the great British Rock fraternity didn’t let us down singing their well oiled heads off and making the trip totally worthwhile. Great to see Girlschool, Wasp and of course the mighty New York Dolls.

It was a great feeling when I walked into the Bristol Academy to see the new Quireboys backdrop hanging at the back of the stage in all its glory, Bruce Murray did a great job getting that together (You can see footage on Youtube). Tonight was the official first night of the tour and the stage setting looked great (Thank you Amanda), we spent a long time sound checking tonight making sure everything was perfect with the monitors and front of house sound. Griff and I are using radio packs now, but we have been using cables for so long we sometimes forget that we have the freedom to go anywhere on the stage… probably get it figured by Newcastle - ha ha!

Its great to see how many people are buying “Half Penny Dancer” the feedback is wonderful. We are really pleased that you are all so happy with it - thank you.

Paul Guerin’s Spanish Tour Diary - part 3

Barcelona was the last show on our Spanish tour, Leah, Dee, Amanda and Emily (The Wags) flew in for the show and it was great to have them there. The show was sold out and we knew it was going to be a great night, this was our sixth show in a row and hats off to Spike, who like the rest of us was fighting a cold, but still sang brilliantly. Again the audience were fantastic and we would like to thank everyone who came to the shows, you really do make it all worthwhile.

Seven AM came around very quickly and me, Phil, Nunny, Pete and Bruce were back on the tour bus heading back to England, we were booked on the 21.50 chunnell crossing, we had thirteen hours to get there and we made it with two minutes to spare, (It would have been a four hour wait till the next one). Pete and Bruce shared the driving and again a big hats off and a huge thank you to them for their dedication, like I said we would be stumped without them.

The Spanish tour was a great success, as usual we didn’t get to see much of the country, it’s travel, gig, sleep, travel, gig, sleep… Its only Rock ‘n’ Roll - but we love it!

24 Nov

Paul Guerin’s Spanish Tour Diary - part 2

El Sol club in Madrid is always a great gig for The Quireboy’s and tonight was no exception, the sold out audience were in fine voice and jubilant mood and we had the thumbs up from the club owner to play for as long as we wanted to… so we did. We have taken to playing ‘Halfpenny Dancer’ over the PA system before we go on stage and at the risk of tooting our own trumpet I think we have made a great record, the band is in top form, the songs really lend themselves to this treatment and I think this is the best Spike has ever sounded... toot, toot!

The famous quote from Winston Churchill “Never has so much been owed by so many to so few” could have been written  about our crew. Bruce Murray who has tirelessly looked after the band for twenty years, Pete Mason who drives us and looks after merchandise and Paul (Nunny) Nunn who is our instrument technician. I wanted to give these guy’s a mention because without them we would be stumped.

Sevilla and Grenada again were great shows and as usual it was great fun meeting and greeting the fans after the shows. The club El Tren in Granada stayed open very late for us so we told the DJ that we only wanted AC/DC blasting out all night... and that’s what we got!

Tonight’s show at the Durango club in Velancia, was kicking. The club reminded me of the club in the movie ‘Dusk Till Dawn’. Tonight’s support band Jolly Joker were a great bunch of guy’s, banging out cover versions of Motley Crew, LA Gun’s, Kiss etc, whilst guzzling Jack Daniel’s and smoking fags Keith Richards stylee. Let me take this opportunity to thank their guitar player Ed, who presented us with a painting of Spike, Griff and myself. We hit the stage at 1.15 am and the audience had lost none of its fervor.  The atmosphere was fantastic, the bar staff were dancing on the bar and it was great to see our friends from Alicante having a great time down the front.

As I write we are driving to Barcelona, the scenery is stunning, looking at the ancient ruins (no I’m not looking in the mirror) you wish the walls could speak. Imagine the feasts, fights, orgies and floggings that took place, the liars, the freaks and fools, minstrels, jesters and crooks all trying to make a buck to pay for the next drink... Nothing has changed eh?

Today’s movie is ‘Team America’, an absolute peach of a movie. Phil Martini can quote you every line from it, as he has watched it so many times. If you haven’t seen it I recommend you check it out its very, very funny.

Later,

Paul.

Paul Guerin’s Spanish Tour Diary - part 1

'The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plane'. Well that’s not strictly true readers. It’s chucking it down here, so all plans for donning flip flip’s( Iv’e got two left feet) and the knotty hanky have been dashed. We are holed up in the Hotel Bastardos where my crazy next door neighbour in London who randomly drill’s and knocks nails in his walls all day long clearly has decided to come on holiday to this hotel and he has brought his drill and his hammer with him and bugger me is he using them. Classic “Carry on Abroad”

We flew into Bilboa on Thursday with the tour starting on Friday. Thursday night in Bilboa was quit civilised by Quireboy’s standards, vino tintino, frothy quenchers and many tortillas were downed before we went to check out the following nights venue. The place was packed with young Spanish folk all sporting Dave Hill from Slade’s hair doo (severe fringe hacking seems to be the order of the day) jiving to the very popular techno music (Technonotice I say) we made a swift exit.

It’s pretty rare that we fly in the night before the show so we took full advantage of the time and got up at the crack of 3.30 in the afternoon. Must be the jet lag ha ha.

The Bilboa show was a cracker, we played for two hours, which felt like two minutes to me. The venue, lights, sound and stage were all first class and the audience were wonderful. The bonus of the evening was security didn’t hoof everyone out the place the second we left the stage so we had a chance to talk to the fans and sign copies of Halfpenny Dancer which we are selling on the tour.

169 miles, 3 hours, too many Haribo’s and six episodes of Californication later we arrive in Gijon. Each leg of the Homewrecker’s tour has had a movie theme. Wev’e been through the Mafioso gang world with the Soprano’s, the beaches of Northern France with Band of Brothers, the debauchery of ancient Rome with ...err.. Rome, the cringworthy put your foot in it world of Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm and now folks its Californication o’clock... time for a party. David Duchovny as Hank Moody the out of control booze/drug/sex addict Hollywood writer is pure genius in this part, he’s also executive producer... canny gig mate... cast yourself in the middle of a crumpet fest (just watch it you’ll get my drift.)

Tonight’s gig in Gijon is in the very swanky Sala Acapulco... mucho red velvet and mucho red wine, a fine combination. Showtime is 9pm which is very early for a gig in Spain but I’m sure they have their reasons, we only get to play 75 min’s tonight due to some ancient bylaw or something daft like that but never the less another killer show. I’ve just had a “Rebell Yell” Humbucker pick up made for me by Bare Knuckles pick up’s and fitted to my main Les Paul and I’m over the moon with the sound I’m getting from my rig. Griff’s Zematus and my Les Paul sound killer together (yawn..yea I know, I’m sorry, but that was just for the guitar players out there). The Spanish audiences are very passionate which is always fun to play to but I must point out that I have noticed a new rock phenomena creeping into the art of audience participation. Mass air drumming, don’t get me wrong I’m all for it as long as it doesn’t take over and make rock guitar hero worship a thing of the past but I reckon I can sleep easy at night knowing that mass air keyboarding will never raise its ugly head in my lifetime. The low point of the evening was when someone stole my Marshall Guvnor’ pedal and my brass slide during the signing session, Ronnie Wood gave me that slide nearly twenty years ago and some thieving hound thought it was ok to pocket it. If any of our Spanish fans knows who has it I would really like it back. No questions asked.

We have a day off in A Coruna, now I reckon you’ll agree with me, whether its Santa Monica, Blackpool, Blyth or Bondi beach any seaside town in the rain is a miserable place so we resigned ourselves to tortilla, coffee, wine and MTV but the god of days off shone down on us and we found a great little bar with  table football  (that is after we had eaten our individual body weights in Indian food).  Now table football is a great game until you wake up the next day and your wrists are completely sprained and you have a gig to do, so when we started feeling the burn me ‘n’ Griff decided to watch the Bourne Supremacy followed by The Silence of the Lambs both dubbed into Spanish which was a very pleasant way to finish off the evening EXCEPT neither of us speak Spanish...ah well you can’t win em all.

The Quireboy’s try to stick to what we call the ‘four hour rule’ which means we will have eaten dinner at least four hours before the show so nothing re-appears during the show, well, this usually goes to plan until tonight. Fernando, tonight’s promoter takes us to a restaurant where it turns out the waiter is also the barman, the chef and chief pot washer, so, by the time we had figured the menu (thank god for Damon’s command of the Spanish lingo) and our jack of all trades had cooked and served each order individually we barely had time to get back to the venue.

The Playa Club is situated on the promenade, there’s something quite wonderful about  playing a gig when you can see the ocean kicking up a storm through the window, oh I’m such a romantic, another great gig, Spike was on top form as usual and had the crowd eating out of his hand, the set is really working out well, I can’t wait to play this show in England.

Cheers for now!

Paul.
